Biden holds first campaign rally in Pittsburgh-area union hall
The rally came hours after the International Association of Fire Fighters (IAFF) became the first union to make an official endorsement in the 2020 campaign, after remaining neutral in the 2016 contest between Hillary Clinton and Donald Trump.
The IAFF, a division of the American Federation of Labor and Congress of Industrial Organizations (AFL-CIO), endorsed Biden for the 2020 presidential race in a video message on Monday.
Sanders told CNN on Monday night that his foreign policy record stands in contrast to Biden's on issues such as trade and military interventions overseas.
He also complained about Biden receiving the firefighters' union's endorsement. "Proof of that is that this ad did something none of the other Democrats have been able to do: put him on the defensive".
Biden argued that the nation's premise of the middle class was being undercut by a "one-way street" greedy companies with executives who pump money into salary increases and stock buy-backs rather than worker pay.
Most were replying to a tweet by Dan Bongino, a former Secret Service agent and frequent commentator on Fox News, who earlier wrote on Twitter that "NONE of the Firemen I know are supporting Joe Biden for President". "We need a President who honours them and their work". He then criticized GM for its recent announcement of more than 14,000 layoffs.
Twelve percent of Democrats wanted to hear more about Sen. "The prospect of mental issues is a concern for me", Carrera said over the weekend at a candidate forum in Las Vegas with union workers. In an effort to back up that claim, starting around 6:00 a.m. today (Wednesday) the President re-tweeted nearly 60 tweets from supporters claiming to be firefighters and IAFF members. He pointed to the anti-Semitic massacre at the Tree of Life synagogue in Pittsburgh six months ago and last week's attack by a fascist gunman in Poway, California.
"Donald Trump is the only president who has decided not to represent the whole country".
A Biden ally was even more blunt about his appeal. "Or is this the same Catholic Joe who has evolved away from the core teaching of his faith?" she asked, noting Biden's evolving stance on late-term abortions after voting against the practice in 1997 and 2003. A second poll, by SSRS for CNN, has given Biden a 24-point lead on Senator Bernie Sanders as the top choice for 39 percent of Democrats. The poll found Biden leading every demographic group.
Sen. Tim Kaine, the Democratic vice presidential candidate in 2016, said, according to The Hill: "Clearly, Vice President Biden bugs the president".
"I want to make no mistake about it, I'm a union guy", Biden said.
